Chapter Nineteen

Cheyenne

“I haven’t had this much pleasure in a date in a long time.”

I don’t miss the way he shifts in his seat, leaning his giant body to one side to relieve what the single purring word I spoke ignited in him. It’s a thrill for me to see him like this.

I’m unblinking, looking at him with intensity and not missing a single movement. The rise and fall of his chest, his Adam’s apple bobbing, and the way he tightens his grip around the steering wheel.

“I’m a …” He fumbles for words as the creaking of the worn leather on his steering wheel whines under his pressure.

He’s so strong.

I’m drawn in by that. Even though I know I’m perfectly capable of protecting myself, knowing that my mate is strong as well invigorates me.

My skin is hypersensitive as I reach over and place my hand over his tightly clenched one. After opening up about Casper, I feel more at ease around him than I did before. I guess what they say about finding your mate can ease your woes.

We should share our lives and give to each other as much as we take.

“You’re welcome.” Releasing the steering wheel, he turns his hand and grabs mine. “Thank you for being the best view to admire while we shared a meal.”

Smooth talker.

In the past, I would have never gone for his type, but I find his flattery exciting, especially since I know he means it wholeheartedly.

“My view wasn’t too bad either.” The scenery around us, turning to twilight with the shades of purple, red, and golden hues of orange, is nothing compared to Lane.

Now that I’ve fully accepted that my future rests with him, I can appreciate how handsome he is. In a rugged way, just like I first thought, but the cowboy look is working for me.

The drive home is a view I’ve seen a hundred times, but all too soon, the house comes into view. Nestled within the trees and bathed in the evening’s fading light is where our date will be coming to an end.

I don’t know how this will work.

I’ve been on dates where the man has walked me to my building door or my car, given me a brief kiss that lacked any and all heat, but
